Welcome to Becky Oexler Music Lessons
At Becky Oexler Music Lessons in Jackson Michigan, learning music is both fun and fulfilling. Since 1990, I have helped students of all ages find their authentic voice and enjoy the art of making music. My studio offers one on one voice and piano instruction in person or online, with every lesson designed around the unique goals, strengths, and learning style of the individual student. Whether you are preparing for a festival, audition, church or community performance, or simply want to bring music back into your life, you will find a warm, encouraging space to grow.
My teaching philosophy is simple. Everyone is unique and I meet students exactly where they are. Together, we build healthy technique, musical understanding, and performance confidence step by step. My slogan is Do it again because repetition with intention is how lasting skill develops. We explore the voice, piano, organ, theory, jazz progressions and improvisation ideas, and composition in ways that make sense for each learner. When students begin to hear and feel their progress, practice becomes something they look forward to rather than a chore.
My background includes years as a music educator in the public school system during the nineties. That experience taught me that while large group instruction has its place, private teaching allows far better results. With focused attention, students advance faster, avoid frustrating habits, and discover their own musical personality. If you are ready for lessons that are friendly, structured, and tailored to you, I would love to welcome you to the studio.

What Sets Becky Oexler Apart
Established Roots in Jackson
This studio has served families in Jackson Michigan since 1990. Generations of students have come through the door to discover that music can be both disciplined and joyful. Local knowledge means I can guide you toward the right performance opportunities, community groups, and repertoire that fits the events happening here.
A welcoming, student first approach.
I teach the person in front of me, not just the lesson plan. If you are a beginner, we will move at a comfortable pace. If you are returning after years away from lessons, we will refresh foundations and build quickly. If you are an advanced student aiming for auditions, we will focus on nuance, style, and presentation.
A broad musical toolkit
Lessons may include voice, piano, organ, theory, jazz harmony as a vehicle for creativity, and composition. Exploring more than one area keeps learning fresh and shows how skills connect. For example, a singer who studies keyboard harmony gains a deeper understanding of phrasing and key relationships. A pianist who learns to sing lines develops more lyrical playing.
Flexible Formats
Flexible formats. Choose in person sessions in Jackson or online lessons if that is more convenient. Online instruction still offers real time feedback and detailed coaching. We use clear assignments and simple technology so that you can focus on music rather than equipment.
Encouragement with accountability
Encouragement with accountability. You will always receive kind, specific feedback and a clear practice plan. I am your coach and cheerleader, but I also help you stay on track. Most students appreciate having goals that are realistic and measurable. When you can see progress, motivation follows naturally.
Services Offered
Voice Lessons in Jackson MI
Voice lessons help you find freedom, range, and expressive clarity. Each session includes breath work, resonance and placement, vowel shaping, diction, and musicianship. We choose songs that match your age and goals, from classical selections to musical theater, contemporary worship, folk, and standards. If you want to prepare for a festival or audition, we will plan repertoire cuts, work on acting through song, and practice confident stage entrances and exits. Healthy technique supports every style, and you will learn to sing with ease rather than force.
Piano Lessons in Jackson MI
Piano lessons build a strong foundation while keeping music enjoyable. Beginners learn reading, rhythm, and technique in a way that prevents tension and sets up long term success. Intermediate and advanced students refine articulation, tone, pedaling, and interpretation. I integrate theory and ear training so that students understand what they are playing and can memorize more easily. We also include chord based playing and lead sheet reading so you can accompany yourself or others in real life situations.
Online Music Lessons
If you prefer to learn from home, online lessons are available for both voice and piano. All you need is a device with a camera and a quiet space. I provide clear angles for demonstration, emailed assignment notes, and practice tracks when helpful. Students appreciate the convenience and the ability to keep lessons consistent during busy seasons
Festival and Audition Preparation
For students heading into festivals, school or community auditions, church solos, or special events, we will map out a timeline and rehearsal plan. You will learn how to mark scores, choose tempi, manage transitions, and handle nerves. We will practice microphone technique or acoustic projection as needed. The goal is to step on stage feeling prepared, professional, and free to share.
Theory, Jazz Harmony, and Composition
Understanding theory and harmony unlocks creativity. We can explore scales and modes, chord progressions, and common patterns that appear across styles. For jazz curious students, we will use simple progressions as a vehicle for improvisation and arranging. If you enjoy writing, composition lessons will guide you through melody, structure, and accompaniment so you can craft pieces you are proud to perform.
How Lessons Work
Getting started is straightforward. During your first lesson, we talk about your musical background and what you want to achieve. I will listen to you sing or play, identify strengths to build on, and outline a plan. Together, we set short term goals for the next few weeks and larger goals for the season. After each session, you will receive notes that describe what to practice and how to practice it. I encourage brief, focused practice sessions that fit your life and produce real improvement.
Scheduling is simple. The studio is open Monday from nine to one, Tuesday from nine to four, Wednesday from nine to eight, and Thursday from nine to eight. Choose in person lessons in Jackson or online lessons. Payment is straightforward and discussed when you schedule. Families appreciate clear expectations and consistent routines.
Parents are always welcome to check in about progress. I believe in open communication so that home practice is supported and stress free. Adult learners receive the same supportive structure, tailored to busy schedules and personal goals. Whether you are preparing for a specific event or learning for personal enrichment, you will feel guided every step of the way.
Who I Teach
I work with children, teens, and adults, from true beginners to advanced performers. Young beginners learn through movement, games, and songs that make fundamentals stick. Teens gain outlets for expression and confidence as they master skills and prepare for performances or auditions. Adults often return to music after years away, and it is a joy to help them rediscover the piano or their singing voice. For every age, my goal is the same. Build solid technique, nurture musicality, and cultivate the courage to share.
My Story and Teaching Philosophy
I became a music educator for the public school system in the nineties, and I am grateful for that foundation. Those years confirmed what I sensed from my own lifelong love of music. People learn best when they feel seen, encouraged, and challenged at the right level. In a large classroom, it is hard to provide that level of individual guidance every day. In private lessons, I can tailor every minute to the learner. That is where I see far better results, and that is why I built a studio where each student can thrive.
Music has been my passion for seventy years. The longer I teach, the more I value the slow and steady process of learning. Real skill grows through focused repetition, mindful listening, and joyful exploration. Do it again is not about perfectionism. It is about returning to a phrase with curiosity until it becomes natural. It is about revisiting a passage at a comfortable tempo and finding beauty in the details. When that habit of calm repetition forms, students start to trust themselves. They discover that they can rely on their ears, hands, and breath even when an audience is watching.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any experience to start lessons
No experience is required. Many students begin as complete beginners, and others return after years away from music. I will assess where you are on day one and build a plan that fits your goals and pace. The first few weeks focus on comfortable technique and simple wins that build confidence while laying a strong foundation.
How long are lessons and how often should I come
Lesson length and frequency are arranged based on age, goals, and schedule. Most students take a weekly lesson to keep momentum steady. Consistency matters more than long sessions. A regular weekly meeting paired with short focused practice times produces reliable progress that you can hear and feel.
Can I prepare for a festival, audition, or public performance
Yes. Preparing students for public singing and playing is one of my specialties. We choose appropriate repertoire, refine technique, polish interpretation, and practice performance skills. You will learn how to handle nerves, how to communicate with an accompanist if needed, and how to enjoy sharing your music with others.
Do you offer online lessons
Yes. Online lessons are available for both voice and piano. The setup is simple and I will guide you through it. Many students use online sessions to stay consistent during busy seasons or when travel is difficult. You receive the same individualized attention, demonstration, and detailed feedback that you would receive in person.
What ages do you teach
I teach children, teens, and adults. For young learners, we focus on fun activities that build core skills. Teens receive structure that supports school and community performances. Adults enjoy a respectful, encouraging space to pursue personal goals. Every age benefits from clear guidance and a gentle approach that builds confidence step by step.
What styles of music can I learn
Your lessons can include classical, musical theater, popular styles, hymns and worship, folk, and standard repertoire. Healthy technique serves every style. Together, we will choose songs or pieces that fit your voice or skill level and reflect your interests so that practice is meaningful and enjoyable.
What materials will I need
For voice, a notebook for assignments and a way to play practice tracks is helpful. For piano, you will need a well tuned acoustic piano or a full sized digital keyboard with weighted keys, along with assigned books or sheet music. I will recommend materials during your first lesson based on your goals.
Ready to Begin?
If you feel the spark to start, the next step is simple. Reach out to schedule your first lesson. We will talk through goals, choose a time that fits your week, and set you up for enjoyable progress. There is room in this studio for eager beginners, thoughtful returners, and focused performers alike. You bring your curiosity. I will bring clear guidance and steady encouragement. Together, we will do it again until skill and confidence feel natural.
